The Atlanta-based Northside Hospital has begun construction on a multiyear expansion and renovation of its emergency department, a project aimed at increasing capacity and improving patient flow. Work is expected to continue through early 2028.

The project includes the renovation of about 7,815 square feet of existing ground-floor space and the addition of a two-story, 67,537-square-foot expansion spanning the ground and first floors. Plans also call for a 17,000-square-foot parking structure with 54 spaces designated for emergency department patients and visitors.

Hospital officials said the expansion will add 18 treatment rooms, along with a new entrance, waiting area and triage space. The design also includes capacity for two additional emergency care teams. A new two-story lobby with stair and elevator access will connect the ground and first floors and provide an enclosed corridor linking the emergency department to the hospital’s main lobby.

Renovations to the current emergency department will be carried out in phases to maintain operations during construction, according to the hospital.

“We are proud to announce the expansion of the Emergency Department at our Northside Hospital Atlanta campus,” said Chris Munn, director of emergency services for Northside Hospital System. “As the Sandy Springs area and surrounding communities continue to experience rapid growth, the need for increased emergency care capacity has become increasingly important.”

“Once complete, the enhanced Emergency Department will allow us to care for more patients efficiently while maintaining the high standards of quality, safety and patient-centered care that our community expects,” he said.

Initial site work will require partial closure and reconfiguration of the hospital’s Green Parking lot. During that time, emergency department parking will be directed to the facility’s Gold Deck.
