Ascension Saint Thomas has begun construction on a new full-service hospital and healthcare campus in Clarksville, Tennessee, a $148.5 million project aimed at expanding healthcare capacity in one of the state's fastest-growing regions.

The Nashville-based health system held a groundbreaking ceremony June 17 with local officials, physicians and healthcare partners. The development will be located on a 96-acre site near the intersection of Highway 76 and Interstate 24 in Montgomery County.

The hospital is slated to open with 44 inpatient beds, and has been designed to expand to as many as 132 beds as demand increases. Planned clinical services include emergency care, inpatient surgery, cardiology, neurosciences, women’s health, neonatal intensive care, oncology and orthopaedics.

In addition to the hospital, the campus will include physician practices, outpatient surgery services, advanced imaging and specialty ambulatory care. An inpatient rehabilitation hospital will be developed in partnership with Lifepoint Health.

Several healthcare organizations are expected to establish a presence on the campus, including Tennessee Oncology, Tennessee Orthopaedic Alliance, Ascension Saint Thomas Heart and Howell Allen Clinic. Montgomery County also plans to partner on a new ambulance and EMS station that will be located on the site.

“This groundbreaking is a direct response to community leaders and physicians who championed a bolder future for local healthcare,” said Fahad Tahir, president and CEO of Ascension Saint Thomas. “Together, we are answering that call by building a next-generation campus engineered to anticipate and evolve with this region’s rapid growth.”

Clarksville Mayor Joe Pitts said the project is intended to help meet healthcare needs driven by population growth in the area.

According to Ascension Saint Thomas, the project is expected to create about 250 hospital jobs. The health system estimates the campus will support more than 1,300 direct and indirect jobs and contribute roughly $316 million in annual economic activity once operational.

Ascension Saint Thomas first entered the Clarksville market in 2005 and currently operates 17 care locations across Montgomery County. Construction is expected to begin immediately, with additional timeline details to be announced as development progresses.
