Emplify Health by Gundersen and Vernon Health have signed a letter of intent to begin evaluating a possible affiliation, opening a formal discussion process that could shape future collaboration between the two Wisconsin-based organizations.
The agreement does not establish a partnership but allows both systems to assess whether closer alignment could improve care delivery and support long-term operational stability. Leaders from both organizations indicated that the review will take several months, with no immediate changes to services, staffing or patient care during that time.
The La Crosse, Wisconsin-based Emplify Health by Gundersen and Viroqua-based Vernon Health have a long-standing relationship, particularly in the Viroqua region, where they have collaborated for decades. The current discussions build on that history, with a focus on whether deeper integration could enhance care coordination and community investment.

“Relationships like these are vital to delivering the best care and ensuring long-term sustainability,” said Heather Schimmers, Emplify Health President. “Emplify Health by Gundersen and Vernon Health are similar in many ways. We share a common culture and care philosophy, and this exploration represents an opportunity to build on our decades-long partnership to better serve our communities.”
David Hartberg, CEO of Vernon Health, emphasized that the evaluation is centered on community impact. “Vernon Health and Emplify Health by Gundersen are opening the door to discussing whether a closer partnership could enhance healthcare delivery in the region,” he said. “Our number one priority is people: Patients, their families, neighbors in the communities the organizations serve, and staff at both organizations.”
Separately, the organizations extended their shared electronic health record arrangement through Epic Community Connect until August 2027, maintaining an existing area of collaboration as discussions move forward.
