Cedars-Sinai has acquired the Beverly Connection shopping center, a retail complex located about a block from its main medical campus, as the Los Angeles health system considers long-term options for expanding and modernizing its facilities.

The purchase gives the organization control of a roughly 10-acre site adjacent to its existing campus along Beverly Boulevard. Cedars-Sinai leaders say the property could eventually support future redevelopment tied to patient care, research, or other health system needs.

“The strategic acquisition of the Beverly Connection will provide long-term options for Cedars-Sinai to revitalize our medical campus and provide the most advanced care to our patients and the community, well into the next century,” said Peter L. Slavin, president and CEO of Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and Cedars-Sinai Health System.

The Los Angeles-based health system said it does not plan immediate changes to the property. Retail tenants at the shopping center are expected to continue operating as usual in the near term.

The acquisition reflects longer-range planning as Cedars-Sinai evaluates how its existing campus can evolve to accommodate future clinical demand in the region. The current medical center has expanded repeatedly since opening in 1976 following the merger of Cedars of Lebanon Hospital and Mount Sinai Hospital in the early 1960s.

That consolidation created what would become Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, designed to provide broad clinical services and support medical research for the growing Los Angeles population.

Today the organization employs more than 17,000 staff and has approximately 3,000 physicians on its medical staff. Cedars-Sinai operates as an academic medical center with a stated mission that includes patient care, research, education and community service.

David Wrigley, executive vice president of finance and CFO of Cedars-Sinai Health System, said the newly acquired property offers flexibility for long-term planning around the health system’s flagship campus.

“We’re following leaders who did their homework and built an incredible medical center in the heart of Los Angeles,” Wrigley said. “The Beverly Connection is a prime location that deserves thoughtful planning to ensure we best meet the needs of Los Angeles and beyond for decades to come.”

Cedars-Sinai has not disclosed a timeline or specific plans for potential development of the site.
