Wellstar Paulding Medical Center in Georgia has begun construction on a $300 million hospital expansion aimed at doubling its inpatient capacity and easing strain on emergency and specialty services in the rapidly growing Paulding County area.

The two-phase project, announced during a groundbreaking ceremony on Sept. 4, will add 112 inpatient beds by 2029. The first phase is expected to be completed in late 2027, delivering 56 new beds, expanded cardiovascular services, and additional imaging capabilities. The second phase will bring the total bed count to 224.

The hospital currently operates 112 beds and a high-volume emergency department with 40 treatment bays. According to Wellstar officials, the facility is nearing capacity amid rising population growth in the region.

“This is a big moment for Paulding County,” said Todd Kennedy, president of Wellstar Paulding. “We’re responding to the needs of a growing community and laying the foundation for a healthier future.”

To improve access and reduce congestion, the health system is also building a $20 million parking deck with 460 spaces, scheduled to open in November. Additional upgrades are underway to manage patient flow during construction, including expanded EMS drop-off areas, a new waiting area for lower-acuity patients, and a discharge lounge to free up inpatient beds.

The expansion aligns with broader efforts by the Marietta, Georgia-based Wellstar Health System to address systemwide capacity challenges. “Not only will this provide additional capacity for our Paulding campus, but it will also support our efforts to manage capacity across our footprint,” said Mary Chatman, executive vice president of acute care operations.

Wellstar has also added 69 exam rooms across seven outpatient sites in Paulding County in recent years, with plans to add 46 more over the next three years. Services range from primary and pediatric care to behavioral health and specialty medicine.

Wellstar Paulding employs roughly 1,900 staff and has received multiple national recognitions for quality and safety.
