Northwell Health plans to deploy Abridge’s ambient AI documentation technology across its 28 hospitals in an effort to reduce administrative workload for clinicians and streamline medical note-taking.

The New York-based health system said the rollout is part of its broader digital transformation and coincides with one of the largest implementations of Epic Systems’ electronic health record software in the country. Abridge’s AI platform will be embedded into clinical workflows throughout the rollout, with support extending to inpatient, outpatient and emergency settings.

Abridge, based in Pittsburgh, converts patient-clinician conversations into structured, billable clinical documentation. Its platform supports more than 50 specialties and over two dozen languages. According to a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association, the technology has been shown to reduce documentation-related burnout by up to 67%.

“As we transform care delivery at scale, we are focused on how ambient AI can reimagine the experience for both patients and clinicians,” said Kristin Myers, executive vice president and chief digital officer at Northwell Health. “By leveraging Abridge’s enterprise-grade technology and expertise, we’re ensuring our transformation remains centered on what matters most: improving patient care and supporting the clinicians who deliver it.”

The health system, which serves more than 3 million patients annually and employs more than 20,000 physicians and 22,000 nurses, said the platform will support more than 50 million conversations this year.

“Physician wellness and resiliency is one of the most essential issues facing healthcare today and promoting it requires redesigning how we work,” said Dr. Jill Kalman, Northwell’s chief medical officer and deputy physician-in-chief. “By reducing documentation burden, Abridge will help our clinicians return to what they do best: caring for our patients.”

Abridge’s CEO and cofounder, Dr. Shiv Rao, said the company is also exploring future use cases for ambient AI, including coding, risk adjustment, and prior authorization workflows.
