The Northwell Cancer Institute has opened a $14 million Center for Women’s Cancer, a 21,000-square-foot facility housed within the R.J. Zuckerberg Cancer Center.

The site is the first of its kind on Long Island, offering integrated care for breast and gynecologic cancers under one roof.

Designed to streamline cancer treatment for women, the outpatient facility brings together surgical oncology, medical oncology, gynecologic oncology, and support services in one location. It includes 26 exam rooms, 10 consultation rooms, two procedure rooms, and an onsite laboratory. Infusion, radiation therapy, imaging, and clinical trials are also available within the same building on the Lake Success campus.

"This new center represents our commitment to precision oncology and the recognition that women's cancers require specialized, coordinated care," said Dr. Richard Barakat, physician-in-chief and executive director of the Northwell Cancer Institute.

The center aims to address the clinical overlap between breast and gynecologic cancers, particularly in patients with BRCA gene mutations and other hereditary risk factors. The approach allows for streamlined referrals between specialties, unified care teams, and faster treatment planning.

Karen Kostroff, chief of breast cancer surgery, said the center was a natural evolution in cancer care design. "Patients going through their cancer journey will benefit from being on the same campus for their surgery as well as for their medical therapy," she said.

More than 20 clinicians will work across specialties, supported by the Northwell Cancer Institute and the health system’s Katz Institute for Women’s Health. Services also include genetic counseling, psychosocial support, and complementary therapies like yoga and meditation.

Clinical trial access will expand under the new model. “Whether it is a medical oncology trial, a radiation medicine trial or a surgical trial, they will all be available to patients in the same building,” said Dr. Veena John, medical director for the new center.

The building was designed by Boston-based E4H Architecture.
