Nationwide Children’s Hospital – Toledo said it will invest between $100 million and $150 million over the next five years to expand pediatric outpatient care capacity in northwest Ohio, including the construction of two new facilities.

The planned sites will house a range of outpatient services, including diagnostic testing, therapy services, behavioral health programs, and clinic space for both primary and specialty pediatric care. The organization said the expansion is intended to increase local access and reduce the need for families to travel outside the region for specialty services.

“This investment strengthens our ongoing commitment to expanding local access to care for Toledo’s children, working collaboratively with other area providers and health care organizations,” said Rick Miller, president of Nationwide Children’s – Toledo. He added that the initiative is expected to support hiring efforts and could result in several hundred new jobs in the region.

The facilities are expected to support multidisciplinary care models by bringing subspecialists together in a single setting. The organization said this approach is intended to improve coordination across providers and streamline care delivery for patients with complex needs. Specific locations and service line details have not yet been disclosed. The target opening window is between 2028 and 2030.

Since entering the Toledo market in 2022, Nationwide Children’s – Toledo reports it has recruited more than 50 pediatric providers. The hospital has also worked with regional partners, including ProMedica Russell J. Ebeid Children’s Hospital, the University of Toledo, and Mercy Health, to expand pediatric services.

“Nationwide Children’s continued investment in Toledo is a testament to their statewide commitment to Ohio’s children and families,” said Ohio Governor Mike DeWine. “Their continued growth and expansion will strengthen pediatric care in northwest Ohio and help address challenges like infant mortality, that not only impact Ohio families but families nationwide.”

Hospital leadership said the expansion will continue to rely on collaboration with local health systems and community organizations to broaden access to pediatric care across the region.
