Royal Philips has introduced a pediatric body array coil from InkSpace Imaging for use with its 3.0T MR systems, expanding its lineup of coils designed for specialized patient populations.

The Amsterdam-based company said the Snuggle pediatric coil has been optimized and validated for compatibility with Philips 3T scanners. The device recently received clearance through the FDA’s 510(k) process and is now available in the U.S., with additional markets planned.

MR exams can be particularly difficult for children, who may struggle to remain still during longer scans. InkSpace Imaging designed the Snuggle coil as a flexible, lightweight alternative to conventional rigid coils. The blanket-like device wraps around the patient’s body and incorporates a high-density array intended to support high-resolution imaging across a range of pediatric anatomies.

According to Philips, the flexible design and array configuration are intended to support image quality while streamlining workflow. The companies said the coil may help reduce repeat imaging by enabling more consistent positioning and faster setup, which could also improve throughput in pediatric MR settings.

“This collaboration combines Philips MR leadership with InkSpace Imaging’s focus on pediatric design,” said Ioannis Panagiotelis, Ph.D., business leader, MR at Philips. “The Snuggle coil shows how thoughtful design can make MR scans less stressful for children while giving clinicians the image quality and workflow efficiency they rely on.”

InkSpace Imaging developed the coil to address comfort and performance concerns in pediatric imaging, said Dr. Peter Fischer, CEO of the company.

“Snuggle was designed and built by InkSpace Imaging to solve a very specific pediatric challenge: comfort and performance without tradeoffs,” Fischer said. “By enabling compatibility with Philips 3T MR systems, we can bring that child-centered design to more hospitals and help care teams get the scan right the first time.”

Philips and InkSpace Imaging said they are evaluating additional coil technologies focused on pediatric comfort and operational efficiency.
