Full-time "Paramedic/Specialist"
This accredited 1,160-hour full-time program leads to certification as an "Iowa Paramedic Specialist" and National Registry EMT-Paramedic. It follows the U.S. DOT 1998 Paramedic National Standard Curriculum.

This three-phase program consists of 15 weeks of intensive, full-time classroom training at the EMSLRC, followed by a minimum of 260 hours of supervised hospital clinical time, then a minimum of 360 hours of supervised field internship with a paramedic ambulance service. Internships are available at a number of approved sites throughout the country.

ACLS Provider, AMLS, BCLS Instructor, NRP Provider, PALS Provider, PEPP provider, and PHTLS Provider

Tuition: $4,950 U.S. includes practical exam fees only. Textbooks are an additional $350 and are not included in the price of tuition. Other miscellaneous fees may apply. Tuition subject to change. Academic credit is not currently offered for the EMT-Basic or Paramedic Programs.

Part-time "Iowa Paramedic"
This 375-hour part-time program leads to certification as an "Iowa Paramedic" and National Registry EMT-Intermediate. It follows the U.S. DOT 1999 EMT-Intermediate National Standard Curriculum.

This three-phase program consists of 120 hours of classroom training via the Iowa Communications Network, one night per week for five hours, plus 80 hours of practical skills training. A minimum of 75 hours of supervised in-hospital internship, and a minimum of 100 hours of field internship with a paramedic ambulance service complete the training. Internships are conducted within Iowa.

This program is conducted once each year, starting in September.

ACLS Provider, PEPP Provider, NRP Provider and PHTLS Provider.

NIH EMS Research Effort Comes to Iowa
The National Institutes of Health has awarded a grant of nearly $2.5 million to a group of researchers at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine, headed by Dr. Richard Kerber, Professor of Cardiology, to study new devices, drugs and strategies to treat serious trauma and sudden cardiac arrest in the field. Over the next five years, the Iowa Resuscitation Outcomes Consortium Site (IowaROCs), with headquarters located at UIHC, will participate with nine other Regional Clinical Centers in the U.S. and Canada in the most extensive government-funded emergency care clinical trials ever conducted.
