The Q.zen line also uses a crystalline silicon detector rather than the traditional amorphous silicon detector. Any kind of detector that converts X-rays to a signal has a certain amount of electronic noise associated with it, but the crystalline silicon detector has a low level of electronic noise so it can produce a useable image with a much lower input radiation dose.

“Because the noise content is so low, you don’t degrade the image as much as you would with the previous generation of detector,” says Dewey.

He adds that to his knowledge, Siemens is the only company that currently uses flat emitter technology and a crystalline silicon detector.
