On August 5, AAMI and the College of Biomedical Equipment Technology (CBET) launched a new professional development pathway for healthcare technology management (HTM) professionals: the Certificate of Leadership Excellence in HTM.
The six-part course runs through Feb. 10, 2026, with two-hour, instructor-led webinars on the first and second Tuesday of each month. Topics include data-driven decision-making, negotiation, communication, and ethics — all tailored to the realities of HTM.
The goal? To help future leaders grow and give current ones tools to sharpen their edge. Graduates earn a leadership certificate, a LinkedIn badge, and preparation for the Certified Healthcare Technology Manager exam. CBET President Richard “Monty” Gonzales spoke with HCB News about why the course matters—and how it’s designed to meet HTM’s evolving leadership needs.

HCB News: What inspired AAMI and the College of Biomedical Equipment Technology to create this certificate program, and how do you see it benefiting HTM professionals in the long term?
Richard “Monty” Gonzales: This certificate program builds on a long-standing partnership between AAMI and the College of Biomedical Equipment Technology centered on education and training. Over the past two years at the annual AAMI eXchange we’ve delivered a full day of leadership training ... met with enthusiastic feedback from the HTM community. This response underscored the need not only for technical training but also for developing the critical leadership skills essential for the next generation of HTM professionals.
As we continue engaging with HTM leaders across the country, it’s evident that preparing individuals for leadership is vital, especially since leadership opportunities often arise unexpectedly. This program marks a pivotal step in that journey, equipping future leaders with the tools to meet challenges effectively and support the long-term success of the field.
HCB News: How was the course content developed, and why was it important to involve industry leaders and healthcare organizations in the process?
RG: The course content for the certificate program has been meticulously developed in close collaboration with senior HTM leaders from across the country, ensuring it reflects the most pressing needs and priorities of the industry. Their feedback and guidance have been invaluable in identifying critical content areas essential to building strong leadership capacity within the HTM field. As the program evolves, we anticipate incorporating new and emerging topics that are immediately relevant to today’s healthcare landscape, allowing us to stay current and responsive to industry demands. The individuals teaching the courses are respected HTM leaders, bringing a wealth of experience and knowledge that enriches the learning experience. This approach not only strengthens the course’s relevance but also lays a strong foundation for the professional development of future HTM leaders.
