Looking ahead further into the future, virtual care will seamlessly integrate and be recognized simply as part of patient care without segmentation.

4. Patients will have more options on where to receive care
We’re not just seeing a shift in the way care is given with a more virtual workforce but expect to see a major overhaul of where care is administered. This includes more micro-hospitals, surgical centers, and at-home healthcare.

On the hospital side, we’re seeing the design of patient rooms evolve. The standard patient room is shrinking and becoming more technology-enabled with virtual nursing to accommodate an influx of patients with more complex needs. The integration of virtual monitoring technology will become standard to enhance patient care and communication with clinicians and family members.

5. The industry will shine a spotlight on behavioral health
There will be an expanded focus on behavioral health in the coming year with an emphasis on solutions for both patients and clinicians. Healthcare providers and payors are now aware that behavioral health is integral to overall health. There’s a renewed focus on employee satisfaction, which includes staff well-being. This awareness of physical and mental health, along with reducing burnout, will be top of mind as we go into 2024.

Thanks to increased virtual care options, including virtual observation, patients experiencing a behavioral health crisis will have access to more support. Increasing awareness can also help reduce the stigma around behavioral healthcare and expand access so more patients can get the support they need.

Embracing change in 2024
While our industry will certainly face new challenges in the year ahead, we also have abundant opportunities to improve patient care and clinician satisfaction. As the healthcare landscape continues to evolve, organizations that embrace new technology, virtual care, the shifting nursing workforce, and behavioral health services will be poised to reap the benefits for years to come.
