The Center for Biomedical Imaging (CIBM) opened recently in Lausanne, containing the world's most powerful magnetic resonance scanner, a 14-Tesla MRI capable of producing images with resolution that is beyond compare. Along with five MRI machines, the center also features PET (Positron Emission Tomography), EEG/Brain Mapping, Phase-contrast Radiology and a signal processing and image analysis facility.

The new center offers advanced techniques for living imaging focusing on fundamental research, and pulls together techniques from several fields including biology, medicine and physics in order to better understand human metabolism. Research is focused on neuroscience, oncology and diseases such as obesity and diabetes.

CIBM is a joint collaboration between the universities of Lausanne and Geneva and the affiliated hospitals (HUB and CHUV), and the Jeantet and Leenards Foundations. The CIBM stresses the positive relationship between research and clinical imaging applications. Along with the experimental machines on the EPFL campus, including the 14-Tesla MRI and a first of its kind 7 Tesla MRI for human clinical research, the University Hospitals of Geneva and Lausanne both have a 3-Tesla MRI machine for clinical use. The machines are all highly compatible, allowing for data sharing and scientific results between sites.
