NYC Veterinary Specialists (NYCVS) New York, New York
This program has four (4) interns that spend one year at our practice and rotate through Internal Medicine, Critical Care, Surgery, and Emergency Medicine in three to four week blocks. Elective rotations are in Oncology, Dermatology, Behavior, Neurology, and Ophthalmology. This internship is most appropriate for those that will most likely pursue a residency after the program or go on to general practice. This program is offered through the Match Program.
Oncology Internship
The Oncology intern works exclusively with our Oncologists in Tampa, Florida. Prerequisite to this program is that the candidate must have completed Small Animal Internship prior to the start of our program. FVS was the first in the country to offer an Oncology Intern program in 1999 and these former interns have all placed in an Oncology residency program following the completion of the internship. The candidate must have the goal of pursuing a residency position in Oncology. This program will be offered through the Match Program as of 2007.
Residency Program Goals
Our goal is to develop specialists in Emergency and Critical Care as well as Avian Medicine by developing critical thought processes and use of the problem based approach to patient care, development of clinical skills and expertise in Emergency and Critical Care or Avian Medicine. The residents will develop a critical understanding of the current veterinary literature, and proficiency in library research skills. Residency programs are offered at this time at Florida Veterinary Specialists only. We look forward to offer similar programs at NYC Veterinary Specialists in the future.
Avian Medicine Residency
This standard track residency is a three-year position meeting for a resident in ABVP (Avian) Medicine. The core rotations will be directly supported by Dr. Teresa Lightfoot, ABVP (Avian), along with Diplomates by ACVECC, ACVIM, ACVS, ACVO, ACVR and ACVIM (Oncology). Prerequisites would include completion of a Small Animal Rotating Medicine and Surgery Internship. This program will be offered through the Match Program and not available every year.
