The purchase of the company then known as Dexter Corp. in 2000 delayed progress, but only for a year or so, Marold said. Now Cardinal is selling a line of Smart- Gown surgical gowns made of breathable viral barrier.
Four large medical products distributors in Italy, Germany and Japan are buying it, too, Marold said. Sales of BVB are seeing the fastest growth of any of the 60 products made at Ahlstrom's Windsor Locks plant, which employs about 500.

The privately held company does not release dollar sales figures, but Marold said sales of the new barrier fabric grew by 50 percent from the third quarter of 2005 to the fourth quarter of this year, then rose similarly to the first quarter of 2006.
Projections call for a doubling of sales within 18 months, he said. "And if we continue at this rate, we'll exceed projections."
