A Las Vegas doctor has agreed to pony up $5.7 million plus interest to settle allegations he improperly billed for radiation therapy services, including for intensity modulated radiation therapy, the Justice Department said Thursday.

Federal officials accused Dr. Rakesh Nathu of double-billing for radiation treatment plans, billing for high-reimbursement procedures when cheaper ones should have been billed, and billing for medically unnecessary services.

"This case is about stealing millions of dollars from taxpayers," Daniel R. Levinson, inspector general of the Department of Health and Human Services, said in a statement.
