Insight Imaging, the leader in fixed-site and mobile diagnostic imaging solutions, announces today that at 23 fixed-site centers within its national network, women and pediatric patients who undergo Computed Tomography (CT) of the chest now have access to the highest levels of safety through the use of new bismuth breast shields.
CT plays a critical role in the diagnosis and management of patients with thoracic diseases. However, as the use of CT increases, the frequent exposure to radiation increases a woman's risk of developing breast cancer. To address this concern, Insight Imaging has implemented the use of breast shields. The breast shield system consists of a 1mm piece of bismuth material placed over chest that prevents the sensitive breast tissue from being exposed to unnecessary radiation. When used during a CT, the breast shield offers up to a 57% reduction in CT radiation exposure without any impact on the image quality.
Because of the risk of breast cancer to women, there is recent heightened awareness throughout the medical industry of radiation exposure to sensitive breast tissue during CT use. At Insight Imaging, all CT scanners are accredited with the ACR (American College of Radiology) and maintain radiation levels well below ACR standards. Additionally, in combination with industry leading radiation reduction techniques, the breast shield ensures that patients receive the highest level of safety.
