Barco said Wednesday it launched the first display cleared by the Food and Drug Administration for use with new 3-D mammography systems.

The 13.3" x 16.6", 5 megapixel, grayscale screen, dubbed the Mammo Tomosynthesis 5MP, is designed for use with the new breast tomosynthesis systems. The Belgian display company said it features quick pixel refresh for viewing multi-frame imaging sequences, such as in 3-D mammography and breast MRI, low noise and twice the brightness of conventional displays (1,000 cd/m²).

The lamp lasts about 50,000 hours, Barco said. The system, which can also be used with 2-D digital mammography, will be shown at the Society of Breast Imaging's annual conference this week in San Antonio, Texas. It should be for sale in the third quarter.
