In fulfillment of its interoperability agreement with Varian Medical Systems in 2020, RaySearch Laboratories has enabled its oncology information system RayCare to sync up with all of Varian’s TrueBeam linear accelerators.

The two initiated an extensive program of joint development and testing, and now say that RayCare is certified to be interoperable with TrueBeam, TrueBeam STx, Edge, and VitalBeam linac systems, ensuring information can flow smoothly between these solutions for scheduling radiation treatments, tracking care progress, and performing other clinical activities.

Launched in 2010, TrueBeam is Varian’s most prevalent treatment delivery solution, providing thousands of radiation clinics worldwide with techniques and capabilities offered by C-arm linacs, including intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT); volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT); and electrons with flexible beam energy selection and non-coplanar beam arrangements.

“We expect that this will drastically increase the addressable market for RayCare, and we look forward to exploring additional potential areas of collaboration and interoperability with Varian products,” said Johan Löf, founder and CEO of RaySearch, in a statement.

RayCare facilitates configurable workflows for different treatment strategies and administrative needs, assigning tasks to the patient’s care team, and manages follow-up actions. It provides an interactive real-time overview of ongoing activities, and is also fully integrated with RayStation and its treatment planning features.

Communication between both Varian’s and RaySearch’s systems is facilitated by a dedicated interface. Both companies originally planned to completely develop and release the interface before the end of 2020, but this took longer than planned, according to Löf.

Varian was acquired in 2021 by Siemens Healthineers.
