Varian, a Siemens Healthineers company, has secured a nod from the FDA to begin selling its TrueBeam and Edge radiotherapy systems with the addition of its HyperSight imaging solution.

HyperSight allows for simultaneous high-quality cone-beam CT imaging during radiotherapy sessions and can be used for offline adaptive planning to adjust treatment based on anatomical changes in tumors and surrounding organs over the entire course without requiring a separate CT scan. The technology facilitates this by enabling TrueBeam and Edge linear accelerators to produce images that meet the criteria of the Hounsfield unit (HU), a measurement of radiodensity.

Additionally, HyperSight on these systems captures images of all anatomical sites with a 50% faster gantry rotation, reducing acquisition time and, in turn, patient discomfort and anxiety. This can decrease patient movement, leading to fewer motion-related artifacts.

"We are excited to expand HyperSight imaging technology to our TrueBeam and Edge platforms and further collaborate with our clinical partners to provide an integrated portfolio that connects the dots along the cancer care continuum,” said Arthur Kaindl, head of Varian, in a statement.

HyperSight was introduced on Varian's Ethos and Halcyon therapy systems in 2022 and is the subject of nine studies that have either been conducted, are in progress, or are due to start at eight institutions. The customer-led Intelligent Imaging Consortium created by Varian has a forum where HyperSight users can collaborate on trials and studies.

Launched in 2010, TrueBeam is Varian’s most prevalent treatment delivery solution, providing thousands of radiation clinics worldwide with techniques and capabilities offered by C-arm linacs, including intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT); volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT); and electrons with flexible beam energy selection and non-coplanar beam arrangements.

The Edge system applies highly conformal dose distribution to lung, brain, and spinal tumors and calculates patient movement in all six degrees of freedom. It also monitors respiratory motion.
