Philips unveils IntelliSpace Radiation Oncology system at ESTRO

Royal Philips unveiled its IntelliSpace Radiation Oncology system this month at the European Society of Radiation & Oncology 2019 Annual Meeting in Milan, Italy.

The intelligent patient management solution is designed to improve the efficiency of, and manage the complexity of, operations within radiotherapy departments.

"Our customers currently face challenges including fragmented workload management, which makes it difficult to see the status of a patient in the pathway and prioritize workload," Ardie Ermers, general manager of radiation oncology at Philips, told HCB News. "Often, they need to log into many different systems, all with different login credentials, and there are also many manual steps and handovers, with limited communication tools between different user groups."

Radiation oncology department workflows typically consist of many steps, from the receipt of the patient referral to the start of treatment, with tasks consisting of consulting with referring physician, carrying out simulation imaging, mapping the contours of tumors and creating treatment plans. Each consists of a range of different checks and approvals required by different stakeholders in the process.

The open, vendor-agnostic platform can be customized to meet the specific needs of a department or individual clinician, and provides comprehensible interoperability across the hospital IT environment.

Alongside the solution, Philips plans to unveil Radiation Oncology Practice Management, a consulting service that identifies and utilizes data-driven insights for decision-making to ensure operational excellence.

In addition, the Dutch Healthcare giant also plans to expand its MR-only radiotherapy simulation portfolio with MRCAT brain, which utilizes AI to automatically generate CT-like density information, based on a single, fast MR scan. Including MRCAT pelvis and prostate, the solution allows clinicians to depend only on a single imaging modality by offering MR’s superior soft-tissue contrast for delineation and density information for dose calculations.

All three additions follow a number of product launches carried out by Philips over the last few months that will be on display at ESTRO, including its Pinnacle Evolution treatment planning software; its dedicated oncology CT simulator, Big Bore RT; and the Ingenia Elition 3.0T MR-RT and Ambition 1.5T MR-RT systems.

Another recent debut was that of IntelliSpace Portal 11 in February at the 2019 European Congress of Radiology in Vienna. The advanced visualization and quantification analysis software enhances not just workflow but bridges secure data sharing between systems within hospital networks to address security and privacy needs of patients and providers worldwide. IntelliSpace Radiation Oncology will build upon these capabilities.

"Philips provides end-to-end oncology solutions across the complete patient care pathway. IntelliSpace Portal is focused on imaging post-processing for radiology," said Ermers. "IntelliSpace Radiation Oncology will be connected to this to make optimal use of the radiology information in the radiation oncology workflow."

Installations at initial pilot sites will take place in the second quarter of 2019.
