UCHealth, in Colorado, has acquired Parkview Medical Center and Parkview Pueblo West Hospital, increasing the number of acute care hospitals in the state under it to 14.

As part of the deal, UCHealth donated $5 million to the Parkview Foundation, which is part of a bigger investment of nearly $200 million that it plans to spend on Parkview and Pueblo County over the next ten years. The $5 million donation will go toward long-term funding for patients, the community, and hospitals; and capital investments to upgrade Parkview’s facilities, equipment, and technology. It will also be used to stabilize Parkview’s finances so it can continue to offer the same services.

Parkview Health System is the largest nongovernmental, nonprofit, private sector employer in the county and has almost 3,000 employees and over 370 physicians. It has served the community for over 100 years and also cares for residents in 13 other counties. It has two acute-care hospitals and multiple clinic locations, including a verified Level III Trauma Center, and offers cardiac, cancer, and orthopedic care.

UCHealth has 33,000 employees, 14 acute-care hospitals, over 150 clinics, and hundreds of physicians across Colorado, southern Wyoming, and western Nebraska. It will help to recruit staff and physicians, enhance nursing and clinical education programs, and work with local university and community college partners of Parkview to continue growing Colorado’s healthcare workforce.

“Expanded access to advanced treatments and clinical trials, increased collaboration with new colleagues and subject matter experts, new technology and innovative tools — it all helps us care for our patients,” said Darrin Smith, president and CEO of Parkview Health System, in a statement.

Following the deal, the Pueblo hospitals have been renamed UCHealth Parkview Medical Center and UCHealth Parkview Pueblo West Hospital.

Parkview, which contributes $232 million to the local economy, will continue to be the largest employer in Pueblo, and its staff, providers, and leaders will retain their positions.
