Braunschweig Municipal Hospital, one of the largest healthcare providers in Germany, will install all Siemens Healthineers equipment at its new diagnostics and analysis center, as part of a 10-year, €80 million (over $84 million) contract.

The company will manage the central laboratory, where researchers will improve therapy processes, patient recovery, and service provisions, starting in mid-2025. The clinic will provide over 1,000 different test methods and analysis options in clinical chemistry, hemostasis, microbiology, molecular diagnostics, transfusion medicine, digital pathology, and more.

Through the partnership, Siemens Healthineers will become the hospital’s future supplier and operator of ultrasound, X-ray, radiation therapy, and laboratory diagnostic equipment. It previously agreed, in 2019, to install and manage all of its ultrasound devices over ten years and supply it with 140 new devices.

“The medical expertise will remain in the hospital, while the equipment will be supported by an experienced industrial partner. This will allow the hospital to concentrate even better on its core competency of patient care,” said Dr. Guido Schütte, head of laboratory diagnostics Germany and the Netherlands at Siemens Healthineers, in a statement.

Work on the center began this summer. It will have two floors and 3,800 square meters of space upon completion. The Institute for Microbiology, Infectious Diseases, Laboratory Medicine and Hospital Hygiene (MILKy), and pathology, molecular pathology, and transfusion medicine research will be located in new rooms there.

Siemens Healthineers will deploy approximately 300 laboratory devices, including the Atellica Solution and the Atellica CI Analyzer to decrease turnaround times as well as IT and consumables. It will also partner with companies supplying equipment for special laboratory areas, and ensure its technology is interoperable with those of other manufacturers.

Other hospitals in the area will be able to use the center to perform diagnostic testing, alleviating care challenges created by workforce shortages. The Wolfsburg Clinic and Wolfenbüttel Clinic have said they will become customers.

Braunschweig Municipal Hospital serves about 1.4 million inhabitants in the Braunschweig region and sees more than 50,000 inpatient and around 200,000 outpatient visits annually, It has 1,475 fully inpatient beds and 24 daycare beds, and is made up of 21 clinics, ten independent clinical departments, and seven institutes.
