Siemens donates to relief effort
ERLANGEN, Germany, May 28, 2008 -- Siemens Healthcare announces the donation and implementation of important medical equipment to the China Red Cross and the Sichuan Provincial Healthcare Bureau, aiding in medical treatment of those affected by the May 12 earthquake that hit the Chinese province of Sichuan. The equipment was quickly routed to the disaster area to assist in the treatment of survivors. The donation of medical equipment follows Siemens EUR 180,000 cash donation and brings Siemens total contribution of aid to the Sichuan earthquake disaster to EUR 540,000.

"Siemens extends its deepest sympathies to those who have lost loved ones during this terrible disaster and is proud to lend a helping hand to the recovery effort," said Jim Reid-Anderson, CEO Healthcare Sector, Siemens AG. "By rushing urgently needed medical equipment to the affected area, Siemens hopes to provide immediate support to survivors and relieve the burden in the aftermath of the earthquake. "

The donated medical equipment is particularly useful to effectively and quickly diagnose trauma and internal injuries of earthquake victims. Meanwhile, the Customer Service team of Siemens Healthcare China has established a 24-hour Emergency Task Force to remote-monitor operation of medical equipment at the local hospitals and provides technical support to equipment of all brands in the affected area. Within 24 hours after the earthquake, the task force team has contacted 79 hospitals in the region, ensuring smooth operation of all the Siemens equipment, as well as surgery capacity of hospitals to handle the higher patient volumes. Siemens donated two SIREMOBIL® Compact L mobile surgical C-arms and two SONOLINE® Premier Color ultrasound systems.

Following the earthquake, Siemens also established a remote diagnostic system to provide immediate help to injured patients. The system linked the hospital in Chengdu, the capital city of Sichuan, with a remote hospital in Mianzhu city, 70 kilometers away from Chengdu and in the center of the effected area. Over 600 patients have been diagnosed using this remote diagnostic system.
