The Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging (SNMMI) has created a new Radiopharmaceutical Therapy accreditation program with the Intersocietal Accreditation Committee (IAC) to ensure sites performing nuclear imaging procedures are up-to-date in their approaches and have the right equipment and facilities.

The program is an extension of existing IAC accreditation protocols for nuclear cardiology, general nuclear medicine, and PET imaging.

“Radiopharmaceutical therapy is a powerful technique for treating cancer that is now being used to great benefit in patients with prostate and other cancers. It is essential that patients receiving radiopharmaceutical therapy be confident that their providers meet high standards of training and experience,” said Dr. Richard Wahl, SNMMI immediate past president and IAC Nuclear/PET Board member, in a statement.
A nonprofit, the IAC accredits facilities that provide diagnostic imaging, interventional and therapeutic procedures, including private offices, clinics, and hospitals.

It has provided accreditation to more than 14,000 sites, and has worked for several years with SNMMI, which is a founding sponsoring organization of the IAC Nuclear/PET accreditation program. Among its accreditation programs are those for vascular testing, echocardiography, nuclear/PET/radiopharmaceutical therapy, MR, diagnostic CT, dental CT, carotid stenting, vascular interventional, cardiac electrophysiology and cardiovascular catheterization.

Ahead of the program, the IAC has released, “The IAC Standards & Guidelines for Radiopharmaceutical Therapy Accreditation”, and an update to the “IAC Standards & Guidelines for Nuclear/PET Accreditation.” Facilities applying for accreditation now must abide by these new standards.

The Radiopharmaceutical Therapy accreditation program will be made available later this year.
