“If you know for a fact that the OEM is not telling you that you can buy a repair part, that should tell you that you won’t be able to repair this system in the field,” said Gomez-Morales. “So therefore, more than likely, it’s going to have to come back to some higher level of maintenance or go back to the OEM. If they are not listing the repair part, it could be because they don’t want you to fix that and want you to send it back to them, or you may require some additional training.”

Parts and consumable list information must be made in every request for information and request for quote, proposal or offer document, otherwise vendors and OEMs will not comply.

Gomez-Morales says the list of requirements for a strong IPS is only growing and now includes cybersecurity demands as well due to medical devices being more dependent on networks and requiring software updates.

He adds that all healthcare leaders should be aware of medical material product support requirements prior to a purchase to ensure the system is reliable, maintainable and sustainable, and that providers must be self-sustained. “When things like the pandemic happen, all bets are off and you’re on your own. If you don’t have this analysis in place it’s going to be hard to provide the right support for these medical devices because you’re so dependent on the vendor for a lot of these things.”
