Reveal can simultaneously deliver DR, bone and tissue images in one single X-ray exposure.
The FDA has given KA Imaging the green light to distribute its dual-energy X-ray detector throughout the U.S.

Known as Reveal, the solution is touted by KA Imaging as the first portable digital detector capable of separating different energy levels. It is designed to differentiate between bone and soft-tissue without motion artifacts in a single X-ray exposure, simultaneously delivering DR, bone and tissue images in one shot.

"Any hospital can now benefit immediately from higher-sensitivity X-ray imaging by simply adding dual energy capability to any installed fixed or portable X-ray machines," said Amol Karnick, president and CEO of KA Imaging, in a statement.

In June, HCB News publisher, Phil Jacobus, spoke to Karnick about the promise and of dual-energy, single exposure X-ray detectors.

With Reveal, radiologists have an unobstructed view of the lungs, which can help in visualizing pneumonia, fractures, catheters, and masses with high sensitivity. Its use of very high detective quantum efficiency simultaneously allows for DR images and for low radiation exposure to patients, as well as high-quality soft tissue and bone images.

The portability of the solution according to KA Imaging is especially important during the COVID-19 pandemic, as it can reduce the risks associated with transporting a patient to a fixed radiology room. It also is priced less than a quarter of a fixed dual-energy system.

Reveal has currently shown promising results on lung cancer patients at Grand River Hospital in Kitchener, Ontario, where it is undergoing testing and expected to scan up to 30 patients. A new clinical trial has also begun this week in Toronto to assess its efficiency in providing early and reliable detection of pneumonia, including COVID-19.

"Early triaging is an essential countermeasure to prevent the spread of COVID-19 infection, and we are confident that our technology can make a significant contribution," said Dr. Karim S. Karim, CTO of KA Imaging, in a statement.

KA Imaging is a University of Waterloo spin-off that specializes in X-Ray detector technology. It is based in Kitchener/Waterloo, Ontario and showcased Reveal last November at the 2019 Radiological Society of North America annual meeting in Chicago.
