MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The Department of Radiology at WVU Medicine J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital has built a new space to improve access and workflow.

The Department of Radiology Reading Room features concierge-level support to providers seeking consultations with Radiology faculty or results of scans or studies 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

A new telephone number, 304-598-XRAY, has been created to allow for direct access to the Department. This line will be staffed 24 hours a day by Radiology staff to provide information about exam results or faculty consultations.

“Our goal is to simplify and streamline the process of contacting our department and physicians,” Amy Bush-Marone, R.N., B.S.N., M.B.A., C.N.O.R., WVU Health System vice president of clinical operations and WVU Medicine Children’s chief operating officer, said. “We realized that our communication workflow was complicated, and resources were located in different areas of the hospital. By moving all Radiology resources to a central location, we are able to serve our providers better and streamline access to Radiology faculty.”

Located on the basement level of the WVU Health Sciences Center, which is adjacent to the third floor of Ruby Memorial Hospital, the Reading Room offers the ability to load outside radiology studies into Epic, the hospital’s electronic medical record system, or download internal studies onto a CD or other device, functioning as an in-house digital film library.

“By allowing greater access to radiology results, we are able to provide more expedient care for our patients,” Mathis Frick, M.D., chair of the Department of Radiology, said. “With our enhanced ability to upload external scans into our records system, we can reduce the need for repeat scans and improve the patient experience.”

The Department of Radiology will hold an open house from 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Jan. 28 and 29 to allow internal and external providers the opportunity to tour the reading room and learn more about the new services.
