GE Healthcare's FDA approved MR neuro deep-learning software, AIRx, increases consistency and productivity

Waukesha, WI - March 14, 2019 –GE Healthcare’s latest MR neuro software, AIRx, is an automated workflow tool for brain scanning built on Edison, GE Healthcare’s next-generation intelligence platform. AIRx, now 510(k) cleared, provides automated slice prescriptions for head scans to reduce previously redundant, manual steps for the technologist.

AIRx produces images for radiologists that have less variability between technologists and between scans, to help lower the chances for a patient to be recalled due to incorrect slice placement. An increase in consistency is particularly important when doing longitudinal assessments.

“AIRx allows for simple and fast slice prescription, regardless of the expertise of the technologist or the complexity of the anatomy being scanned, with greater consistency between technologists and exams over time,” said Larry Tannenbaum, VP and Medical Director Eastern Operations, Director of MR & CT at RadNet. “It is particularly helpful for difficult tasks, such as triple oblique scans of the optic nerve, which are hard for a human to accomplish before the patient has the opportunity to move. As a radiologist, this accelerates the scan set up and can actually help improve diagnosis, especially in follow-up examinations where accurate exam to exam registration is critical to identify subtle changes in disease progression over time.”

The new software, AIRx, features a pre-trained neural network model that leverages deep learning algorithms and anatomy recognition to define the correct anatomical landmarks and automate the scanning process for routine to challenging set-ups. The algorithm automatically aligns the scan prescription to anatomical references that are based on a database of over 36,000 images sourced from clinical studies and reference sites.
