ROCHESTER, N.Y., Dec. 13 — Orthopedic Center of Palm Beach County installed a CARESTREAM OnSight 3D Extremity System (see video link) at its Atlantis, Fla., headquarters location. The practice’s hand, foot and ankle and sports medicine specialists have been extremely pleased with its image quality and performance, according to CEO John Hornberger.

“We are committed to embracing innovative technology that can equip our specialists to make a more accurate diagnosis and develop a comprehensive treatment plan,” said Mr. Hornberger. “Our orthopaedic surgeons are pleased with the system’s ability to perform weight-bearing exams with exceptional image quality that is even better than traditional CT systems.”

This extremity imaging system is both affordable and convenient for patients because the imaging exam and diagnosis can be performed in one office visit, Mr. Hornberger explains.

The system has been used for diagnosis of subtle Lisfranc and wrist fractures, as well as flat foot deformities. It also is instrumental for trauma decision making, pre-operative planning and analysis of fusion progression.

The practice installed the compact extremity imaging system in a room with an existing X-ray system. “We moved the OnSight system into a room and plugged it in. There is no need for room renovations so it’s a very easy process,” said Mr. Hornberger.

A key feature of the system is the metal artifact reduction software that provides enhanced visualization of metal content and reduces the visual distortion caused by screws, implants, rods and other metal objects to create improved visibility and diagnostic confidence.
Unlike traditional CT technology, this cone beam CT system has a large-area detector that captures a 3D image of the extremity in a single rotation, which takes only 25 seconds. A patient simply places the injured extremity into a donut-shaped bore in the system.

Since the patient’s head and body are not confined, patients do not experience the claustrophobia that often occurs with traditional CT systems. Dose is significantly reduced because only the affected body part is imaged. The compact extremity system can be installed in an exam room and plugs into a standard wall outlet.

Carestream is shipping its OnSight 3D Extremity System in the United States, Europe and other countries.
