Hologic announced on Tuesday that two new technologies for its 3Dimensions breast tomosynthesis system scored FDA approval.

“We kept customers and patients top of mind while developing these innovations, and really thought through the opportunities to improve mammography with regard to cancer detection, speed, dose and patient comfort,” Pete Valenti, president of Hologic’s Breast and Skeletal Health Solutions division, told HCB News.

The Clarity HD high-resolution 3-D imaging technology is designed to find subtle lesions and fine calcifications. It features an advanced detector and 3-D imaging algorithm that work together to generate high-quality images regardless of the patient’s breast size or density.

The Intelligent 2D imaging technology works in conjunction with Clarity HD to improve image quality, clarity, contrast and detail at a lower dose compared to 2-D mammography alone.

The 3Dimensions system also features the company’s SmartCurve breast stabilization system, which is the same shape as a woman’s breast. It’s intended to reduce pinching and ensure that there is uniform compression over the entire breast.

“Our new technologies make the 3Dimensions system the industry's fastest, highest resolution system ever, and customers using our Genius exam on the 3Dimensions system will find that it continues to be superior for detecting cancer, even in dense breasts,” said Valenti.

To date, Hologic has installed over 5,000 of its 3-D Mammography systems in the U.S. According to the company, more than 90 percent of women between the ages 40 and 75 currently have insurance coverage for a Genius exam and over 16 million American women undergo the exam each year.
