The Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel announced on Thursday that it has installed Bruker’s Biospec 15.2T USR preclinical ultrahigh-field MR system.

"[This] instrument will enable new forms of multiplexed imaging not previously available to the institute, with the aim to develop, optimize and implement genetically engineered reporter systems for MR with artificial 'multicolor' characteristics," Dr. Amnon Bar-Shir of the department of organic chemistry at the institute, told HCB News.

The new 15.2T MR will be used in the institute’s MR Biosensors laboratory alongside its Bruker BioSpec 4.7T MR and Bruker 400 wide-bore spectrometer.

"The instrument will also deliver superior spectral resolution for functional brain studies, the capability of studying low-gamma insensitive nuclei, and serve as imaging platform for an accompanying dissolution DNP hyperpolarizer," said Bar-Shir.

The institute’s ultimate goal is to gain a better scientific understanding of the biomolecular processes of certain diseases, as well as advanced biomaterials that have the potential to impact a variety of emerging diagnostic and therapeutic approaches.

The institute’s Neeman Laboratory is leveraging preclinical MR to noninvasively monitor in vivo biological variables in order to track the progression of certain diseases such as cancer. In addition, its Bar-Shir Laboratory is using synthetic chemistry, nanotechnology and molecular biology approaches to develop new MR biosensors and tracers.

According to Bar-Shir, this is the fourth Biospec 15.2T USR preclinical ultrahigh-field MR system installed worldwide.
