Philips has unveiled a workflow solution that speeds up treatment planning for prostate cancer using MR-based auto-contouring to allow the ability to create a treatment plan 25 minutes after an MRI scan.

The product, RTdrive MR Prostate, was unveiled at the 59th American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) meeting this week in San Diego.

The RTdrive MR Prostate utilizes Philips Ingenia MR-RT platform and its magnetic resonance for calculating attenuation (MRCAT) solution, which creates a simulated CT scan based on MR images, providing the bulk density based on CT data necessary for treatment planning. It then performs auto contouring of the prostate and organs at risk.

“It provides a consistent methodology for getting your contours, because there’s a lot of variability depending on which dosimetrist is involved, so this gives you consistency and speed, so the dosimetrist can concentrate on more difficult cases and things where there can be value-added steps instead of busywork,” Scott Mestman, business development manager for MR therapy and radiation oncology at Philips, told HCB News while showing off the new solution on the show floor at the San Diego Convention Center.

“The main bottleneck right now in radiotherapy is from the time of scan until the time the patient treatment starts,” Mestman said. “We’re trying to help departments condense that time so patients can start treatment more quickly. It’s very disconcerting to be a patient and have to wait a week, or 10 days, or two weeks, so this really helps with that process.”

The company has non-clinical evidence showing that the elapsed time from when the patient scan starts on the MR scanner to an actionable treatment plan is 25 minutes, when using the Philips Pinnacle³ Auto-Planning system.

“Contouring can take a long time,” Mestman said. “Every department is different on how long that’s taking, but we can say that it’s not unusual for a department to have seven days from the time the patient is imaged before the treatment starts.”

There are two forms of RTdrive MR Prostate. One is RT Drive Core, which will work with any treatment planning system. The other integrates with Philips’ Pinnacle³ Auto-Planning system.

The company is working on similar workflow solutions for other cancers, Mestman said.

“Philips is going to be developing more workflow-oriented solutions to assist the radiotherapy professionals in condensing busywork for them, making things more consistent and quicker,” Mestman said.
