Toshiba Medical will showcase its Aquilion LB CT system for radiation therapy planning next week at the American Society of Radiation Oncology annual meeting in San Diego.

This system is ideal for hospital radiation oncology departments as well as free standing radiation oncology centers, Tim Nicholson, senior manager of market development in the CT business unit at Toshiba Medical, told HCB News.

Its 90-centimeter bore and optional high-capacity couch that holds up to 660 pounds make it ideal for bariatric patients. It also has a 70 centimeter field-of-view with an optional extended 85 centimeter field-of-view.

The Aquilion LB comes standard with the PURE ViSION CT Detector, which assists in acquiring high-quality CT images with its 16 detector rows. When the detector was introduced in March 2015, Toshiba Medical claimed it has 40 percent more light output than other detectors on the market.

The company’s Aquilion Lightning 80 CT system, which was launched in April, is also equipped with the PURE ViSION detector. Both systems also feature the AIDR 3-D Enhanced iterative reconstruction algorithm to help reduce radiation dose.

The Aquilion LB is also equipped with the Single Energy Metal Artifact Reduction software. This helps to reduce the artifacts that metal implants cause so that physicians can view more clinical information.

At the ASTRO meeting, Dr. Jatinder Palta, radiation oncology chair, medical physics at the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine, will discuss his experience with the Aquilion LB with SEMAR during a dinner symposium.

The Aquilion LB CT has FDA approval and is commercially available in the U.S. This is the first time Toshiba Medical will be showcasing the new features of the Aquilion LB.
