Letter from the Editor – Changes at HealthCare Business News

August 20, 2015
Sean Ruck
From the September 2015 issue of HealthCare Business News magazine
I interviewed for the editor-in-chief position with DOTmed in June of 2008. I was offered the position days before my wife and I got married in July and started the job two days after returning from my honeymoon. So, when I started at DOTmed, as I would joke over the years with DOTmed President Philip Jacobus, I knew the honeymoon was over.

It was a long time ago, but I think Robert Garment was the first person I met with during the interview process. Robert had been at the helm of HealthCare Business News (then DOTmed Business News) at its inception. He had stepped in again when the editor who was hired fell ill. It seems fitting that Robert will step in once more, becoming executive editor as I assume my new role as contributing editor. I had no idea I’d be writing my 85th letter from the editor just over seven years later.

Being at the helm of the news operation for all those years was an incredible challenge, but I’m proud of what I managed to accomplish. When I started, our magazine was a relative unknown, and over the years, with help from a great staff of writers and designers, as well as the professionals in the industry who willingly offered expertise through interviews and feedback, my knowledge of the industry grew as our magazine and online news offerings, and our reputation, grew.

Now, I have a big filing cabinet filled with every issue of the magazine (including the handful of issues that were produced prior to my arrival) and I can’t help but think — that’s going to be a heavy box to pack when we move. But in all seriousness, although I’m stepping down as editor-in-chief, I’ll still have some magazine issues to add to the collection as a contributing editor.

Besides Robert, the rest of the team is also going to continue to make our news better and better. Our editorial director, Glenn Kalinoski, is doing a fine job making sure the trains run on time while our online editor, Gus Iversen, has stepped in to fill some big shoes that were previously occupied by Loren Bonner, and he’s doing a commendable job. Meanwhile, staff writer Lauren Dubinsky is a rock. She’s worked hard to build her industry knowledge and it shows. And I’m confident that Stephanie Biddle, our design director, who I worked with from the beginning, will continue to be a steady and helpful guide.

I’m thankful for the opportunity Phil gave me. It’s no little thing to put that much faith into someone you’re bringing in from outside the company. And over the years I think we both learned a lot from the experience. I’m also thankful to have had the chance to work with so many of the people within and outside of our news department that make DOTmed what it is. Finally, I want to thank all of our readers — both of the online news and the magazine. Without your support over the years, our news organization wouldn’t be what it is today. I hope that you feel you’ve received a good return on your investment. I believe more good things are on the way for our news organization and I invite you to stay on for the ride.
