Black Book Market Research asked over 6,000 management and physician leaders to rate mobile electronic health record (EHR) apps based on 18 key performance indicators.

Aside from determining which programs physicians are having the most success with, it also revealed some interesting statistics on the overall adoption of mobile apps for EHR management and reference.

According to the results, 52 percent of physicians surveyed currently access patient records or reference medical data from an iPhone or android device.

"With more than half of physicians currently using a mobile device in their medical practices, these EHR vendors are allowing providers to choose which platform best fits into their workflow in multiple health care delivery settings including highly usable mobile products," said Doug Brown, managing partner of Black Book Market Research, in a statement.

Among the companies performing at the top of that growing market segment are: HealthFusion, Greenway, Cerner, Allscripts, athenahealth, PracticeFusion, iPatientCare, Kareo, and ADP AdvancedMD.

The highest rated mobile EHR provider, however, was drchrono — a distinction the company has taken home from the annual Black Book survey three years running.

"As the transition to mobile devices has been rapidly occurring over the past five years, progressive EHR vendors have responded with clear plans and successful products to help expand the user experience," said Brown.

Individual patient management strategies already incorporate smartphones for 31 percent of responding physicians. Among them, emergency physicians, radiologists, OB GYN, general surgeons and orthopedic surgeons were among the most frequent users.

Of all the clinicians surveyed, 70 percent indicated they intend to use mobile EHR devices and software by the end of this year.
