Medical Museum: Madame Curie’s Radium

August 27, 2015
From the August 2015 issue of HealthCare Business News magazine
Each month, we visit Dr. Blaufox’s Museum of Historical Medical Artifacts to take a look back at the medical equipment that cleared the way for what patients encounter in doctors’ offices and operating rooms of today. Some equipment may be recognizable, while other featured inventions have since become obsolete or have had their usefulness discredited. The picture and description appear courtesy of Dr. M. Donald Blaufox, M.D., Ph.D, from his website: www.mohma.org.

Category: Radionuclides
Estimated Date: 1903
Name: Madame Curie’s Radium
Manufacturer: Madame Curie
Description: This is a frame that was preserved at the New York Academy of Medicine containing ashes from possibly the first therapeutic use of radium in the United States, and some radium from that time. The paper has radiation burns from the exposure. Read the text to fully appreciate the exhibit. One of the vials has fallen to the bottom of the frame because the radiation destroyed the thread that was holding it mounted.
