“Because we had the opportunity to do that with Georgia Regents — evaluate how to utilize technology effectively and the complexities of doing that in real-time in a health system — we are able to take that to other health systems,” said Bierbaum.

Philips is currently discussing similar partnerships with other health care systems. Because of the rapid consolidation among hospitals, some health care systems want Philips to drive standardization across the multiple facilities and other health care systems want Philips to assist them with population health management.

Going forward, Bierbaum believes that there will be many more partnerships like these between vendors and health care systems. Other industries, including the airline, information technology, and manufacturing industries have been involved in this concept for a while but the health care industry is a little late in the game.

“It’s coming [to the health care industry] because of health care reform and the U.S. requirement to continue to drive down costs and manage a population of patients that are increasingly growing older and have more chronic diseases,” said Bierbaum. “It’s requiring hospitals to not just look for incremental change but also transformative change and to do that you have to bring in a range of partners, not only on the technology side but also in the other areas.”
