How is running a business like a camping trip?

by Philip F. Jacobus, CEO | February 04, 2015
Whether you work for a big business or a small business, independently or for a company, it is not easy. One of my favorite expressions is, "If it was easy, everybody would be rich!"

I look at every business transaction as if it is a camping trip. If I am about to go on a camping trip, I want to make sure I take everything that I might need. I do not want to get out there in the wild with my wife and find out that I have forgotten something, whether it is water or food or coffee (God knows everybody needs coffee), a sleeping bag or a tent, it is my job to think of everything that I might need and be prepared.

The same is true whether you are providing customer service, selling or buying. You have to try to think of everything.

I am not saying anything that all of you do not know, but it is a good idea to think before you act.

Do not just concentrate on what can go right, try to consider everything that could go wrong. Consider what can go wrong and have a plan no matter what the circumstance.

What happens if the unit you are buying does not show up on time or if the engineer does not arrive when they are supposed to?

What about trucking and transportation?

I can tell you that 90% of the problems I have had in business have had to do with trucking or transportation.

The ship is late to be unloaded, the truck driver has a "flat tire," the dog ate my homework!

That is why it is so important to deal with a quality company. And that is why the ratings on DOTmed are so important.

Look at the ratings of the companies that use our site before you do business.

Most importantly of all, rate the companies and individuals you are happy with. Do your part to get the word out about the companies that are reliable and are prepared for your camping trip.
