DOTmed: Please outline the scope of this project.
MaineGeneral's new hospital, the Harold Alfond Center for Cancer Care, was the first LEED-certified health care building in Maine. The new regional hospital will follow in its footsteps by featuring:

--Highly efficient heating and cooling systems
--Renewable energy sources where feasible
--Building materials from local sources

"Green" construction and design will greatly reduce our environmental impact while saving:

--$900,000 in annual operating costs
--12 million gallons of water a year

The project will cost $322 million for construction and equipment, including $10 million to redesign the Thayer Campus in Waterville into the TCOC. It is financed by:

--MaineGeneral equity contribution: $35 million
--Harold Alfond Foundation grant: $25 million
--Harold Alfond Foundation matching grant: $10 million
--Community fund-raising campaign: $10 million

MaineGeneral will finance the rest of the project using long-term debt spread over 30 years at the lowest available rate, much like a house mortgage. MaineGeneral will work hard to reduce long-term debt by keeping project costs down through careful planning and exceeding fund-raising goals.

DOTmed: How will this project help the community you serve?
It will offer all single rooms -- providing privacy to patients and their families, top-quality care.

It will include an Emergency Department (ED), state-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment services and comprehensive outpatient care.

It will help keep and recruit more of the best doctors and health care professionals in the Kennebec Valley for years to come.
