Siemens Healthcare is also developing a hybrid MR/PET modality. Both PET and MR divisions of the company are working together on this product, says Brait.
Providers and manufacturers are optimistic about the expansion and global growth of PET. Many predict that more and more studies will continue shifting to PET. Still, the usefulness of several gamma camera tests and the cost of equipment secure the place of nuclear medicine in the imaging realm.

"We see long term a very bright future for PET, there's no doubt, it's just going to be rationalizing what's going to happen in the changing economic and health care regulation environment," says Smith. "We hope it's a short-term hesitation on our customers' parts to make large capital purchases."

The market is expected to grow as awareness about PET/CT capabilities to assess cancer treatment gains ground. Demonstrating the efficacy of the modality continues to be a vital aspect of the industry's health.

"I think the biggest [hurdle] is the economic challenge. It's proving the ROI on a premium piece of equipment initially, even though the benefits are tremendous and there are all kinds of papers showing the benefits of PET/CT and patient management," says Bender. "I think the challenge is having more robust health care economic type studies and comparative effective studies to show that PET really is a superior tool in managing certain cancer types and overall in cancer."
