The World Health Imaging, Telemedicine and Informatics Alliance (WHITIA), a non-profit organization focused on delivering critical imaging services to populations in need, recently announced the Remi-d, a portable, low-cost X-ray booth that can be placed virtually anywhere around the globe.

The Remi-d has the potential to benefit millions of people worldwide. Providing remote medical imaging is crucial in areas where radiologists may be scarce.

Merge Healthcare had the X-ray system on display during the recent 2009 RSNA technical exhibition. In this video, WHITIA marketing coordinator Krista Dany provides a demonstration of the Remi-d, complete with multi-lingual and culturally sensitive avatars and photo-booth like capture of X-ray images. Tim Krauskopf, CTO of Olivia Greets, also talks about the telemedicine side of the technology.

CEO Ivy Walker spoke with DOTmed off camera at RSNA 2009 and indicated that there were already discussions underway to deploy the Remi-d, once approved by the FDA, to regions in sub-Saharan Africa and parts of Southeast Asia. Targeted areas include regions where there are higher incidences of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), Tuberculosis and Black Lung Disease.

The prototype system was developed in partnership with Merge Healthcare and Olivia Greets, the company that developed Remi-d's remote link and computer-generated avatar technology.
