AHA elects board members
AHA Elects New Trustees to the Board

Washington D.C. -- The American Hospital Association (AHA) has elected eight new members to its Board of Trustees for terms beginning January 1, 2008 and ending December 31, 2010. The Board of Trustees is the policy-making body of the AHA and has ultimate authority for the control and management of its direction and finances.
New board members include :
Mark Adams, M.D., chief of medical staff for the Harrison Medical Center in Bremerton, Wash., practices vascular and thoracic surgery. He is also a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of Washington.
Adams is currently a board member of Regence Blue Shield, the Western Conference of Prepaid Health Plans and the Olympic Peninsula Kidney Center. He is former president of the Washington State Medical Association and has served on the Board of Trustees of the Washington State Hospital Association.
Mary Blunt, president of Sentara Life Care Corporation & Rehabilitation in Norfolk, Va., since
1999, has been with Sentara for 16 years. She oversees and directs operations planning and marketing strategies for the long-term care/senior services division, which includes skilled nursing and assisted living facilities, an adult day health care center and mobile meals programs, among other vital services. Blunt also oversees rehabilitation services in four Sentara hospitals.
Blunt is currently chair of the AHA Governing Council for Long-Term Care and Rehabilitation, having served as a member since 2004. Blunt is also a member of the Virginia Board of Nursing Home Administrators and the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE).
Raymond Grady, president and CEO of Evanston Hospital and president of the Hospitals and Clinics division for Evanston Northwestern Healthcare in Evanston, Ill., joined the staff of Evanston Northwestern Healthcare in 1979 as an assistant vice president.
Long active in the AHA, Grady was appointed to the AHA Board in January 2006 to fill a vacancy; he now begins his first full term as a board member. Grady is a member of the AHA's Long-Range Policy Committee and has served as chairman of the board of the AHA's Institute for Diversity. He served on AHA's Commission on Workforce and was AHA liaison to the Accrediting Commission on Education and Health Services Administration, as well as chair of the Accrediting Commission. He is also the immediate past chairman of the Illinois Hospital Association and is a fellow of ACHE.
Glenn Steele, Jr., M.D., Ph.D., has been president and CEO of the Geisinger Health System in Danville, Pa., since 2001. He joined Geisinger from the University of Chicago where he served as the Richard T. Crane Professor in the Department of Surgery, vice president for Medical Affairs and Dean of the Division of Biological Sciences and the Pritzker School of Medicine.
Steele is a past chairman of the American Board of Surgery and serves on several medical journals' editorial boards. Steele is a member of various medical organizations, including the New England Surgical Society, the American College of Surgeons, the American Surgical Association and the American Society of Clinical Oncology. Steele serves on numerous not-for-profit and for-profit scientific advisory boards. In addition Steele is a member of the Institute of Medicine (IOM) of the National Academy of Sciences and is a member of the Commonwealth Fund's Commission on a High Performance Health System.
Phyllis Wingate-Jones is the senior vice president for Carolinas Medical Center-Mercy, a full service, community acute care hospital, and Carolinas Medical Center-Randolph, a freestanding psychiatric hospital. Both hospitals are a part of Carolinas Healthcare System in Charlotte, N.C. and provide the full range of inpatient and outpatient services.
Wingate-Jones has been an active leader in state hospital associations throughout her career including associations in Virginia, Maryland and recently North Carolina. She has served as chairwoman for the governing council of the AHA Section for Metropolitan Hospitals and currently serves as an AHA commissioner to The Joint Commission. In addition to her role with the AHA, Wingate-Jones is also currently a member of the VHA Central Atlantic Performance Improvement Council. She is a fellow of ACHE and recipient of the ACHE Maryland Regent's Award for Excellence.
Crystal L. Haynes, CEO of Saint Louis University Hospital, Saint Louis, Mo., has more than 25 years of experience in the health care field and was previously chief operating officer of the George Washington University hospital in Washington. Haynes will serve as chair of the AHA's Regional Policy Board (RPB) six.
She is currently chair-elect of the Missouri Hospital Association (MHA) board of trustees, and was awarded MHA's 2006 Visionary Leadership Award for her contributions to improving the health of her community. Haynes was honored by the St. Louis Business Journal as one of the "Most Influential Businesswomen in St. Louis" and Tenet Healthcare Corporation named her to the company's 2003 Circle of Excellence. Haynes is a member of ACHE.
J. Thomas Jones is president and CEO of West Virginia United Health System, the largest healthcare system in West Virginia. Previously, he served as CEO of the Genesis Hospital System in Huntington, Va. Jones will serve as chair of the AHA's RPB three.
Jones is a member of the AHA section governing council for Health Care Systems. He is chairman of the Group Purchasing and Member Relations Committee of Premier Inc., a current member and former chair of the West Virginia Hospital Association Board of Trustees and Executive Committee, and a diplomate of ACHE.
Michael J. Madden is vice president of Advocacy and Development for Providence Health & Services in Seattle. He previously served as CEO of Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Burbank, Calf., and vice president/chief executive for Providence Health & Services-Southern California Region. Madden will serve as chair of RPB nine.
Madden is a past chairman of the board of the California Healthcare Association and the immediate-past chair of the board of the Alliance of Catholic Health Care Systems. Madden is also former chairman of the board of the Hospital Association of Southern California. He is active in his community, having served as the board chairman of the Sycamores, a program in Pasadena serving the mental health needs of boys and their families. He is also a long-time board member of the Providence High School Board of Regents and currently oversees the high school's operations.
